The primary interest in the acoustical
design of dormitories and university residences is privacy between
rooms. Life styles in university residences differ from those in usual
multi-residential buildings. The design challenge is to achieve the
required isolation while controlling construction costs. Other areas
of importance include mechanical system noise and vibration control,
and surface finishes in common rooms and gathering spaces. Exterior
sound isolation is a consideration for noisy sites near railways or
highways.
