Scope: Architectural Acoustics, Environmental Acoustics

CTA Provided acoustical consulting services from design through construction. The first step was to measure the ambient sound levels of the neighborhood to determine how quiet the environment was before the addition of a concert hall. An important goal was to assist Elkus Manfredi in developing a design that allowed Bowery to operate their venue without worrying about disturbing the neighboring residences.

Development of noise controls for the facade, doors, and ceiling included studies of concert sound levels for different genres at various local venues. Sound levels were predicted using computer software and compared against the baseline and local noise codes to inform design decisions. The New Balance Track Facility also overlaps a portion of the ceiling of the venue, which poses a sound isolation challenge.

The interior sound quality is how most people experience this space. Bowery was planning for a top-of-the-line sound system by L-Acoustics, so we tuned the space by focusing treatment at the ceiling plane for crisp, low-frequency bass control. This was imperative to achieve balanced room acoustics for the 3000-capacity venue and deliver a room that supported the sound system.

Roadrunner was named Boston’s Best Large Music Venue in 2022 and again in 2023 by Boston Magazine.
